November 29,2012: RaiseAChild.US, a two-year-old nonprofit, based in Hollywood, that supports LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) opportunities for becoming foster and adoptive parents, is holding multiple family recruitment events in California and New York, beginning today at the Oakland Museum of California.
The recruitment events will continue on December 3 in Santa Ana (Orange County Center for Contemporary Art), December 4 in West Hollywood (Hadid Gallery) and December 6 in New York City (New York Fire Museum). For detailed information on these events visit http://raiseachild.us.
The U.S. Census Bureau says the number of same-sex couples who have adopted children has tripled over the past deciade from 6.477 in 2000 to 21,740 in 2009. Statistics published on RaiseAChild.US say that ofver 65,000 adopted children and 14,000 children in foster card are in homes of homosexual couples or individuals.
Featured in San Franciso Chronicle, actor and comedian Alec Mapa ("Ugly Betty" and "Desperate Housewives") and Jamie Hebert, above with son Zion, are eager to share their experience as first foster parents, and then adoptive parents, for Zion. Mapa will perform and speak at the recruitment events, highlighting his positive experience of forming a family through the foster care system and adoption.
“I wish we had 100 families like Alec and Jamie,” says Robyn Harrod, their social worker and Adoption Director at Southern California Foster Family & Adoption Agency (SCFFAA). “Like all our foster parents, they commit to provide a stable home...When things got tough, these guys did not give up. Watching this family take shape through fostering then adoption has been a great perk of my job.”
