February 4, 2013: An five-year, $2.2 million/year federal grant for Project READ (Raising Educational Achievement for Students with Disabilities") is at the disposal of the state Department of Education (CDE); the monies will be distributed as a State Personnel Development Grant (beginning July 1, 2013) among 44 middle schools in "high-need districts," following a competitive application and evaluation process, state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson announced last week. (The state has identified approximately 400 low-performing middle schools.)
The money, funded through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), is to be used for "evidence-based professional development of school staff" with the goal of improving reading achievement and overall academic performance.
