March 13, 2013: Fenton Ave Charter (Lakeview Terrace, Los Angeles County) was awarded the 2013 Hart Vision Charter school of the year honor yesterday at this year's 20th annual California Charter Schools Association (CCSA)'s four-day long conference in San Diego.
According to CCSA's website, the award is given to honor outstanding achievements from across the movement.The awards recognize individuals and schools that have made significant contributions to the Association's mission to increase student achievement by supporting and expanding California's quality charter public school movement.
Originally established by the California Charter Schools Association's predecessor, CANEC, in 1995, the awards are named in honor of Gary K. Hart, a retired California State Senator and former California Secretary of Education. While serving as a state senator, Hart sponsored the legislation that established California charter schools.
